Description

Varanasi, also known as Banaras, Benares, or Kāshi, is a historic city located on the banks of the Ganges River in northern India.

As one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, Varanasi holds immense historical and cultural significance. Its ancient name, Kashi, dates back over 2,500 years and was associated with a kingdom of the same name. Nearby Sarnath is home to the Lion Capital of Ashoka, believed to commemorate the Buddha’s first sermon in the 5th century BCE. In the 8th century, Adi Shankara established the worship of Shiva as a formal sect in Varanasi. The celebrated poet Tulsidas composed the Ramcharitmanas, a Bhakti-era adaptation of the Sanskrit Ramayana, in this city. Additionally, Varanasi was the birthplace of prominent Bhakti movement figures such as Kabir and Ravidas.

The city is globally renowned for its ghats—stone steps leading to the river—where pilgrims perform sacred rituals. Among the most notable ghats are Dashashwamedh Ghat, Panchganga Ghat, Manikarnika Ghat, and Harishchandra Ghat. Varanasi is also where Hindu genealogy registers are traditionally maintained.

Prominent temples in the city include the Kashi Vishwanath Temple dedicated to Shiva, the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, and the Durga Temple, all of which draw devotees and visitors alike.

I appreciated the service, but the Varanasi trip itinerary felt a bit tight. The locations were wonderful, though having extra time at a few places would have made it even better. Overall, it was a satisfying trip.
